Choosing the Right Real Estate Agent

By Kate Barker

Whether you’re buying or selling a home, a real estate agent helps you navigate the process. There are a lot of agents out there, so how do you find the one that’s right for you?

Ask Questions

Talk to a few real estate agents before deciding on the one. Ask questions about their experience, the market, current trends and what they bring to the table. Make sure they handle the type of property you’re buying or selling. A real estate agent who specializes in luxury homes, for example, may not be the best person to approach about your one-bedroom condo.

Get Testimonials

Don’t be afraid to ask a potential real estate agent for testimonials from previous clients. Knowing their history and experience will say a lot about how they can handle your specific needs. This will also be insight into what types of homes the agent works with, and whether or not they work in specific neighbourhoods.

Check their Fees

As with anything in life, you get what you pay for. While an agent who charges an exorbitantly high commission should raise red flags, one who’s significantly cheaper than the rest is also something to worry about. Find someone within your budget who can meet your needs and expectations.

Go with your Gut

At the end of the day, you and your real estate agent are going to spend a lot of time going through this process together. You want to have a solid working relationship. In the mountain real estate market, lifestyle is key, so choosing an agent with similar interests will make the process go a lot smoother for both of you.
