Here’s to the Holiday Season!

By Kate Barker

With the holiday season just around the corner, here are several ways to celebrate, right here in the Bow Valley.

Give to Those in Need

Not everyone can afford the magic of the holiday season. We can all help those in need by supporting local charities. The Bow Valley Christmas Spirit Society provides grocery and gift cards to people who need support in Canmore and the MD of Bighorn. The Bow Valley Elves will once again be collecting gifts for the community’s seniors. Stop by the Giving Tree at Rusticana to pick a gift tag. Learn more about this year’s programming, register to volunteer, apply for support, or donate at christmasspiritcampaign.com.

Catch a Show

Celebrate the season with a classic show, or something new and fun. Carter-Ryan Theatre Productions brings quality entertainment to Canmore and Banff. The Canmore gallery is hosting Joy to the World: A Holly Jolly Christmas Cabaret from December 12-30. This night promises music, laughter, and unforgettable stories about Christmas.

In Banff, enjoy the heartwarming tale of A Christmas Carol at the Fairmont Banff Springs. This classic story comes to life through the use of actors, puppets, and incredible soundscapes. This show runs from December 6 to 30 and it’s perfect for families.

Support Local

Start off the season with a special holiday market! The Banff Christmas Market promises 9 days of magic with over 100 vendors, live music, an outdoor fire lounge, and so much more. Hosted at Warner Stables, this year’s annual market takes place November 17-19, November 24-26, and December 1-3.

The Canmore Christmas’s Artisan’s Market features over 75 local makers with handcrafted goods. It takes place at the Canmore Recreation Centre, November 18-19. Find pottery, artwork, jewellery, paintings, décor, bath and beauty products, clothing, fine foods, and more. Proceeds from the $5 admission support the Canmore Preschool Society.

Find Some Joy

Let’s face it, it’s been a tough year for a lot of people. If you can, take a moment to find some joy this holiday season and celebrate the beauty around us. The Rotary Club of Canmore is hosting their annual Festival of Trees at the Malcolm Hotel. Stop by the hotel in December and wander through the magical forest. This display is always open, and it’s completely free.

In Banff, discover the wonder of the season with In Search of Christmas Spirit, a walk through the Cascade of Time Garden with a live Christmas story told by the animals of Banff National Park. The event takes place on select nights from Nov 17 to Dec 31. Tickets are required, but the event is totally free.
