Why You Should Buy this Winter!

By Kate Barker

If you’re going to spend winter anywhere, it might as well be in the mountains. There are world-class ski hills everywhere you look, professional cross-country facilities at your doorstep, and miles upon miles of backcountry access for all your favourite winter activities. But is it the right time to buy into the mountain dream? Here are 4 reasons why you should buy this winter.

  1. There are fewer buyers

Between the snow, the cold and the general darkness of the season, there are fewer buyers looking for a home during the winter months. This means you’ll have less competition for a potential property. The thinned-out crowds can lead to better bargaining and potentially lower asking prices, since there is less demand on the property. Take advantage of the market when there are fewer buyers competing for your dream home!

  1. Sellers are motivated

If someone is willing to list their home in the winter, they’re motivated to sell. Selling in the winter can be harder because of the weather, fewer buyers and the hassle involved. Sellers during this time may be ready to look at lower offers or may be open to different terms and conditions. Homes also close faster during the colder months, making this the perfect time to take advantage of motivated sellers and put in an offer that works for you.

  1. You can see the house’s mettle

Everything looks great in the spring and summer. The trees are blooming, the grass is greener, and the birds are serenading you on your way to your viewing. In winter? It’s dark, it’s potentially slippery and the house has to work to keep in the heat and out the cold. How does this house really handle the season? Do the gutters drain, or are they dammed with icicles? How hard does the furnace work to keep the place warm? Are there any drafts in the windows, doors, or ceilings? This is an opportunity to really see what the house is worth and negotiate a price to match.

  1. VIP treatment

Buying a property means you’ll rely on numerous professionals to help you through the process. From mortgage brokers to real estate agents, lawyers, home inspectors, moving companies and more, you’ll have a team to help you with this purchase. In the winter, these people are less busy and therefore have more time to provide you with individual attention. You may find greater flexibility and convenience during the colder months, which can make this whole process that much easier.
